So I just got back from a Tom Price town hall type meeting. He gave a basic run down of what the republican's strategy is moving forward on fighting this legislation. In 2010 it will be an election year for Congress so congress people are less willing to pass legislation that could be controversial. Even though the bill has passed the house it has to go to the senate, and the Republicans are just trying to delay a vote on this bill back into 2010 because they feel the democrats will loose seats in this election. If the Republicans can get more seats then they can defeat this bill (220 yes votes vs 215 no votes). Republicans only need 3 more seats to block any effort. Remember Obama wanted Congress to vote on a bill in July, but the Republicans have been successful at delaying the progress on the bill until November. All they want to do is try and drag out the process in hopes to attack this bill at a later date when they are stronger. If a bill does get through Congress then if they can get control over Congress then they won't vote to fund this bill in the future. Also by pushing this back into 2010 there won't be any movement on it through the winter by the time election rolls around people being re-elected will be less likely to vote for any legislation that could get them dumped.I continually hear in the media (both left and right outlets) that Obama administration isn't doing anything, but really I think Obama's administration is trying to do something. However, it's in the interest of the Republicans to hamper progress in Congress so he can't do anything. They are just trying to prevent any legislation from making to the president's desk. If you think Congress is dragging it's feet then it is. But, it's a concerted effort by the Republicans to do so.This is the political strategy I'd like to hear someone like Jon Stewart call attention to. I think most American's think Congress isn't doing anything, but it's really that it's just being interrupted and slowed down on purpose. It's a dirty tactic, but calling direct attention to it will cause them to stop doing it.I do have serious questions as to why the Democrats are so stupid as to let this happen. They are trying to be genteel and act like they'll go away or see how childish they are acting and stop. But, that's stupid and just naive which has always been their problem. Democrats are naive at best but possibly just inept.
