Americans were far more religious 60 years ago than now yet are education system was better then. This is just a hokey argument to cover for the fact it is not evangelical nutbuckets but feel-good progressive liberalism that has destroyed our schools. Teachers now are acting like "friends" to our students instead of being instructors, playing computer games like Oregon Trail are more valued instead of teaching reading, writing and arithmetic, and competition is gone, every child is considered equal, if a couple bad eggs flunk a test, the scores are "re-adjusted" with a curve and everyone's scores are brought up. We might as well just eliminate A's, B's, and C's and just give the little chillun' gold stars for completing a test. Funny too how fly-over red states in the midwest, you know where all those crazy bible thumpers live, score higher on the SAT than Cali-pornia. Just two things that stood out for me (I'm only like 1 1/2 years out of college myself): Go learn a versioning system like Subversion, if your school didn't teach you how to use it. It's not a big deal to learn but being prepared helps! Second, go learn a build system if you school didn't teach you it; i.e. Maven, or Ant for Java. Without build systems, building commercial software would absolutely suck. My school neglected both of those items. I don't think I blame them for the second one (for a small school project there's not much reason to include anything like a build system), but the first one could have been taught in less than one class, and actually would have saved the teacher work.I do, to a point, understand why they weren't included: they're tools for software development, not technically computer science. But dangit, most people in CS go on to make software, so you'd think I'd be a bit useful to include...!

...the last time I seen a 74 year old clerk working at a grocery store....uhm never.Most of the times, the checkout clerks are 18-30 year old. Grocery stores try to avoid elderly people as clerks because they can't move very fast as it is. The objective for most grocery stores is to get people checked out as quickly as possible.Besides, if "Thelma" can't make out a disguised barcode, I'd hate to see how observant she is when it comes to customers trying to pull a fast one. (Worked grocery cashier for 2 years in a small town....you would be amazed at what people will try to do.)
